About
Dead to Me is a Netflix Original dark comedy series with Seasons 1 and 2 available to stream. The show takes place in Laguna Beach, California, and follows lead characters Jen, played by Christina Applegate, and Judy, played by Linda Cardellini.
Jen is a real-estate agent and mother of two boys who has recently lost her husband who was struck by a car in a hit-and-run. As a result, she tries several methods to cope with her loss. At a grief support meeting, Jen meets Judy who befriends her and emphasizes with her loss, telling her that she has recently lost her own husband to a heart attack.

Jen can be described as pessimistic with a harsh, sardonic sense of humor. Judy, on the other hand, is optimistic and rather submissive. Despite their contrasting personalities, the two click almost instantly and help each other cope with their loss, downing bottles of wine and munching on Entenmann's cookies.
However, as the plot progresses, Jen becomes more suspicious about the death of her husband, and more and more secrets become unleashed between the two friends and the other people in their life.

Review
When you first start watching this show, you might immediately assume that it's a comedic, chick-flick (not that I would personally mind this, but of course that's not everyone's cup of tea). My boyfriend was under this impression when I introduced him to the series, but midway through the first episode he immediately realized this wasn't true.
So do not get discouraged! Watch the first full episode and I assure you, you'll instantly be hooked, especially if you're one who enjoys dark or tragicomedies, like me. The plot is constantly transforming from episode to episode, causing a dramatic shift from Season 1 to Season 2. Jen and Judy also undergo significant character development throughout the series, which sort of reminded me of the classic film, Thelma and Louise. Thelma being Judy and Louise being Jen, minus the 1966 Thunderbird, square dancing, and Brad Pitt of course.
Dead to Me is suspenseful, engaging, and humorous all at the same time. The fact that the show focuses on such a serious issue, but keeps consistent wit and humor throughout made it original and unlike most shows you'll find. I'm so thrilled that it's being renewed for a Season 3!
If you're looking for a dark comedy, filled with mystery, suspense, and two strong female leading roles, then Dead to Me is the show for you.
